अष्टम ज्योतिर्लिंग · The Trimurti linga

The three-eyed Lord at the river’s source

Presiding deities: Lord Shiva as Trimbakeshwar — a unique three-faced linga representing Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (the Trimurti), worshipped with Goddess Parvati.

ॐ नमः शिवाय त्र्यम्बकेश्वराय

Trimbakeshwar is the eighth Jyotirlinga and is unique for its three-faced linga representing the Hindu Trimurti — Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver and Mahesh (Shiva) the destroyer. The linga sits in a small depression with water dripping over it from a natural spring. According to the Shiva Purana and Skanda Purana, the severe penance of Sage Gautama and his wife Ahalya pleased Lord Shiva, who manifested here and released the Godavari — the “Ganga of the South” — from his matted locks to absolve Gautama of a sin. Trimbakeshwar is the only place in India where the Kalsarpa Shanti, Narayan Nagbali and Tripindi Shraddha rituals are authentically performed, drawing devotees from across the country.

History & heritage

A Peshwa masterpiece in black basalt

The present temple is an 18th-century masterpiece, built by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao (Nana Saheb) of the Maratha Empire. Constructed in black basalt over roughly three decades in the Hemadpanthi style, its courtyard and shikhara carry some of the finest stone sculpture of the Peshwa era — gods, sages, animals and celestial beings carved in extraordinary detail. The site’s origins reach far older, traditionally linked to the Pandavas and to the Godavari’s descent through Sage Gautama’s penance.

Above the town rises Brahmagiri, regarded as the physical source of the Godavari; the river first appears at the Gangadwar shrine on the hill and at the Kushavarta Kund beside the temple, where pilgrims bathe before darshan. Trimbakeshwar is one of the four Kumbh Mela (Simhastha) sites — every twelve years the Nashik–Trimbak Simhastha draws millions for the Shahi Snan at Kushavarta and Ramkund, with the next great mela in the 2027 cycle. The town is also the samadhi place of the Nath sant Nivruttinath, elder brother of Sant Dnyaneshwar, whose annual palkhi yatra is a major regional pilgrimage.

Darshan & rituals

Aarti & darshan timings

During darshan, devotees view a silver crown (mukut) placed over the linga; only priests view the three faces directly, and the linga itself is shown to the public only on special occasions. Here is the regular daily rhythm.

Darshan

Mangala Aarti5:30 AM
Morning darshan5:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Evening darshan5:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Shayan Aarti9:00 PM

Timings are indicative and change on festival days, during the Simhastha and with temple advisories. Special pujas such as Kalsarpa Shanti and Narayan Nagbali are performed on specific tithis and need advance priest consultation. Always confirm before travel — message us and we will share the latest schedule and puja muhurats for your dates.

Dress code & what to carry

Trimbakeshwar enforces one of the strictest dress codes among all Jyotirlingas, especially for the inner sanctum. Men performing puja or close darshan must wear a dhoti and uttariya (upper cloth) only — no trousers, jeans or western wear. Women should wear a saree (the traditional nine-yard Maharashtrian saree is preferred) or salwar-kameez. Dhoti and uttariya are available for rent near the temple. Mobile phones and cameras must be deposited at the locker facility before entering.
